The mad monk of symphonic agit-prop metalers S.O.A.D, Serj Tankian fails however to assemble the righteous pantomime lunacy of his full band on this a third warning shot from his solo debut. An old story then. The middle-eastern influences and jarring, schizoid changes in mood and tempo remain as does the impassioned (and absurdly melodramatic) global-anarcho shamanism, but the result seems somewhat blunted. Perhaps it’s a sense of the predictable in all it’s unpredictability or the absence of Malakian’s penetrating force-ten wail, but missing is the threat of violence. Weird but not wonderful.
