LORD SKYWAVE
LORD SKYWAVE
THIS IS MUSIC LTD.

Simon Lord makes slithering electro-soul, evoking profane pelvic trysts at the bottom of the dance-floor. Amongst a diverse arrays of crepuscular experiments into 70’s Soul, Reggae, and Dubstep, its ‘My Name Is Lord Skywave’ that particularly shines, reminiscent of the Timbaland-produced ‘Pony ‘by Genuwin (remember?) -the Dirty South figurehead being a major influence. Until, that is, the track transmogrifies into Lord’s Grandmother’s dusty piano excerpts, recorded seventy years ago. Frustratingly these pointless dedications to Grammy dominate and while they are actually quite eerie and must mean a lot to Simon, the interludes consist of nothing more than piano / oboe – which could have been Old Mother Lord killing time while her kettle boils for all we know. But y’know, with a drum machine in the background. The box fresh, accomplished (self) production and bad-ass electro flourishes notwithstanding, this is a talent undone in pursuit of a slightly pretentious artistic conceit.

5/10
