WYE OAK
IF CHILDREN
MONARCH

Although the music of bohemian brother and sister act Wye Oak is labeled ‘Folk-gaze’, in reality the two elements are largely compartmentalized. Most tracks wallow in calming, electric folk that is pleasingly enveloping. When it’s time, however, the lull will be muscled out by a line of throbbing feedback until a surge of bracing, hefty guitar sonics, multi-layered and fantastical, loosens your molars, before evaporating into thin air. Even with unassuming, dreamy vocals the siblings manage to communicate a sense of quiet apprehension but more frequently a timid hope for their future. So endearing is their debut we are hopeful for their future too. They are like the Wendy And Peter of the Freak-Folk scene with its obsession with regressing to childhood. ‘If Children’ is just about the most perfect title.

8/10
