PETER, BJORN AND JOHN
‘LIVING THING’
WITCHITA RECORDS

The ubiquitous ‘Young Folks’ made them unlikely stars, but anyone willing to investigate further found PB&J’s full length a markedly complete, sonically adventurous, pop gem, a concept album in which their big hit was but an early chapter in the story of a love-affair from early splendour to bitter end. Their full length follow up is an Afro-retooling of the kindness and naif domesticity on Writer’s Block and continues their grab-bag approach to sounds.

The album illuminates with the Casio-calypso tenderness of Track 3 ‘Just The Past’ and the playground hippy-hop of ‘Nothing To Worry About‘,the latters playful optimism, lumbering funkiness and kiddie-choir unavoidably recalling Justice’s D.A.N.C.E. They find their stride in the middle section with a trio of Paul Simon-esque ditties, rediscovering the warmth and wonder of their past glories.

Although stopping short of full mbaqanga cacophony, wisely they don’t tamper with Graceland’s irresistible recipe and it’s a very natural union, even forgiving of Moren’s neck-less squawking. Less becoming of them is the vivid but lank experimentalism and baleful vocals at the drab backend of the album. Irrespectively, Africa has been good to these Swedes.

7/10
