THE TEMPER TRAP
CONDITIONS
INFECTIOUS

Quite a year our friends down under are having. After international contagion Empire Of The Sun finished stripping MGMT of their rightful air-play, next comes this arena-bound export from Melbourne, swooping in and gobbling the both of them whole like a chart-friendly sperm whale. Shriek on hearing the words ‘Epic’ and ‘U2-infuenced’ in the same sentence? Fear not young Death-punk goblin. Albeit with their sights forever trained on that endless horizon and as edgy as a space-hopper, if you can override your prejudices The Temper Trap will have you crushing madly, wrong-footed by a loving, lambent kindness.

Overseen by Bjork producer Jim Abiss, the setting is as fragrant and balmily welcoming as the Melbourne night air. They carry an innate humility, intimated by offsetting the grandiose gravitas with Dougie Mandagi’s keening David Mcalmont-esque falsetto. Its like he’s confiding the secrets of angels, rather than a contrivance used to transport cod-gospel Bono jingoisms or empty Chris Martin-like consolation. Its a lead heart that can resist. Of special mention is ‘Sweet Disposition’ that wells with longing before exploding in all directions for a chorus of blinding romantic brilliance. Prepare for universal ardour.
