THE VERY BEST
WARM HEART OF AFRICA
MOSHI MOSHI

The pursuit of many a po-faced hi-fi colonialist and in recent times, thanks to the legacy of Talking Heads, an unlikely hipster touchstone, Africa again provides fertile ground for modish first-worlders in the shape of buzz-magnets, The Very Best.

However, Radioclit, Brit-based producers behind the project have shunned art-school reformulation with all its clever urban juxtapositions and instead, save a few dance loops and eighties synths, opt for the wholesale mimicry of a generically indigenous vibe, presented alomost entirely in the Malawian tongue of their vocalist.

Accurate and complete without feeling contrived, it was for this fare that tasteful Eighties lefties would scour the continent like caring pharmaceutical reps – that innocent, peerlessly ebullient sound that seems almost in celebration of life as much as the joy of music.

Consistently mood-lifting therefore, highlights including the poppy title track featuring Erza Koening and a turn from pan-global lynchpin MIA, firing hot on ‘Rain Dance’. John Calvert

7/10
